Anne Frank was a young Jewish girl living in Amsterdam during the occupation by the Nazis. She was forced to go into hiding above her father's work for two years to avoid prison. During her time in hiding, she kept a diary and wrote about her experience. Frank writes about her loving and compassionate family and also mentions how she has built new relationships with the other families in the house. In her diaries, Frank frequently emphasizes the value of family, emphasizing how her trials were made easier by the presence of those she loved who understood what she was going through.

In the beginning of the text, Anne Frank talks about how she is going into hiding because the Germans invaded. The Frank family had to go into hiding while the Nazis took over with another family. Anne and her family are forced to leave a lot of their belongings at home. Anne thinks that this is going to be really challenging and very unfortunate.

A shadow child is normally a third or fourth child in the family. these children had to be kept a secret due to a law during this time. During this time Anne’s father gave her a diary in which she invested most of her time in, writing about her conflicted emotions regarding her family, a possible love interest with a boy named Peter, who was one of the other four fugitives, and her insightful and evolving ideas about life. The entries were written in the form of letters to her imaginary friends. It was even taught in some schools, although this was extremely controversial. There are more than one versions of her diary that exist today. The first version being the original diary Anne wrote the first time, she then began editing and rewriting her first version of the diary, she did this after she heard a radio announcement about a writing competition regarding diaries written during the war.

The story takes you through their everyday lives of hiding in the annex which also includes arguing and times of happiness.
