One of the most talented and famous American baseball players was Babe Ruth. Babe Ruth was an American pitcher/outfielder from Maryland that began his professional career playing for the Baltimore Orioles in 1914. He then was bought by the Boston Red Sox and later the New York Yankees. After his career as a player was over, he managed the Boston Braves. The major factor in introducing baseball to Japan was the United States. The first introduction to baseball the Japanese people had was by Horace Wilson, an American professor teaching in Tokyo in 1872. Baseball soon developed in some regions. It was not a very popular sport, but it managed to bring together a league in 1936. This new baseball league was formed titled “Nippon Professional Baseball”. Once World War Two was launched, the Japanese created new names for “base”, “strike”, and “pitch”. This was very likely due to the want to disassociate the game with Americans and the bad relationship between the United States and Japan at the time. After the end of the war, American troops were stationed in Japan and to promote better Japanese-American relations, they tried to play baseball with each other. As relations between Japan and the United States got better, baseball spread rapidly in Japan, which led to the creation of two leagues within Nippon Professional Baseball: The Central and Pacific. American teams soon toured Japan, playing against Japanese teams and exploring their skill level. This resulted in American teams inviting Japanese teams to practice with them in America. The exchange of playing techniques and skill benefitted both Japan and America. American baseball scouts decided to observe these Japanese players, in hope of a breakout star. Masanori Murakami was the first Japanese player to play on an American team. He played for the San Francisco Giants in 1965, returning to his country in 1966. There was a heavy amount of both social and political stress put on Murakami’s return to Japan, with some opponents of the inter-country exchange of players on both sides.
