Baby boomers a group of Americans that many can say they are a part of. A group that no other generation can compare to, a generation that played a decisive role in our history.
From the beginning no one knew what to call them names such as War Babies, Spock Babies Sputnik Babies, Pepsi Babies, Now Generation are some of the many. The reason that all of these names did not stick was that the baby boom was a moving target. In 1947, birth rates peaked to 3.7 million, which equaled one-third more than in 1945. However, after that the birth rate dropped for the next three years. The Demographers felt they knew this was going to happen that American families were done having babies after the return home from war and that they made up their wartime babies in just two years. The truth is they were wrong. In 1950, the reduced number of babies was still higher than the number of babies born in 1945. In the 1940s there were still 32 million babies born which was 8 million more than in the previous decade. In the years afterward, the United States continued to turn itself into a maternity ward. In 1951, there was 3,845,000 babies born outdoing the census by nearly a half million. 1952 topped the previous year with a new all-time record of 3,889,000 babies. By 1960, the population had hit 160 million people. This added more people in six years then the previous30 years. 4 million babies were born in 1954, this was the first time this had ever happened. The American mother was producing babies more babies each year than the entire population in 1790. This also caused the Census Bureau to not be able to accurately calculate population even to an extreme level of not being able to keep up with monthly birth rates.
