Introduction
Congress chose the bald eagle as the national symbol of the United States of America in 1782, but this move faces a fierce opposition from Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers of the nation. He was keen to make the turkey as the national symbol. Moreover, the bald eagle has an association with the ancient Roman Republic while the turkey is a true native to the United States.

Congress made many changes to the ancient eagle symbol to accentuate the majestic beauty and strength of the large bird. It is also white –headed i.e. not the one as the classic emblem of the great Roman Republic.
