Band And Choir Should Be Allowed In High Schools

Many high school kids at Winfield Mt. Union want to be in the performing arts, but have other classes they need to take during those periods. These high school kids who are in Band and Choir have a lot of scheduling issues, they want to be in Band and Choir, but can’t. When kids have to choose between classes, Band and Choir are always the first to go. Band has always been first period and Choir has always been second period. Every year Precalculus is second period. This causes conflicts in scheduling for those who wish to be in Choir. For the kids in Precalculus, they have to take Choir independently or not take Choir at all. Most kids choose to not take Choir at all and just take Precalculus. Kids would be able to take more elective classes. Having it separate days would take out a period for kids who take both Choir and Band. There would be a lot less scheduling issues and conflicts with high school schedules as well. Art comes into play in scheduling issues too. Many students have had to take it independently instead of taking the actual class. These students can’t learn all the material taking the class independently, it doesn’t give them all the hands on experience they need. Students won’t be able to experience all the different types of media, like painting, chalk, and so on.
If Choir and Band alternated days they may have more kids out for these electives. Since the subjects would be the same period, but different days, it’s open a period and clear some schedule issues. The Band and Choir would become bigger and better all at the same time. The more diversity of voices and instruments would mean our music department would be broader and bigger.
There are downsides to this suggestion as well. There wouldn’t be as much practice times. It could show how well we can achieve within a short period of time. If you had less time to work in class, you won’t get as much done, but you’d be able to make up for the lost time in your lessons. There are always downsides in every situation. Band and Choir can be related to the arts. Using your imagination and hearing the chords can create a picture in your head. Students will learn teamwork, you need to be able to listen around you for other students so you can blend to make one voice or one tone.
Students will have a better knowledge of self-confidence. It can help with stage fright and being able to get out of your comfort zone, but only if you’re ready and willing to. Music training can help you develop language and reasoning. Students who have early musical training will develop the areas of the brain related to language and reasoning. The left side of the brain is better developed with music, songs can help imprint information on young minds.
We have interviewed two teachers, Mr. Wachs and Mrs. Mullin. Here are their inputs on Choir and Band being opposite days. For Mr. Wachs, “It’d be fantastic, because for the kids who want to be in arts wouldn’t have to worry about the other classes clashing together. They could take more than one. Having this would allow kids to take another academic classes. It wouldn’t affect my schedule, it’d affect the kids who’d take our classes.
