How much does summer vacation mean to you? That's the question many families ask themselves as they make the choice for year round schooling. With year round schooling students take several breaks, similar to a winter break in length, instead of one long break in the summer. Some people feel it is a terrible idea, while others say the academic aspect is superior. Although some people feel strong about year round schooling, year-round schooling is not the best educational option for students. Year round schooling originally began in the early 1900s. They need time to grade exams and finalize grades from the previous semester, and they only have a short break between school years (Towler). By the time they do this, they might have less than a week to prepare themselves, their lessons, and their rooms (Towler). This is not an adequate amount of time for the teachers and it could impact students learning as well (Towler). Teachers also might have a hard time collaborating with each other because many of them are on different tracks (Towler). Students on different tracks might be learning completely different, or maybe even opposite lessons due to lack of collaboration between their teachers (Towler). Teachers are forced to share classrooms and supplies with teachers on other tracks in many year round schools, making it difficult to use their room to its full potential for learning (Zubrzycki). Any teachers and staff that want to continue to further their own education by attending college over summers will have to find another way to fit it in their schedule, or just not do it at all (Vandewater). If teachers Cannot further themselves educationally in college, their students will be at a disadvantage because their teacher simply would have less information to teach them (Vandewater). Even though year round schools are rising in popularity in most places, they aren’t everywhere. An example of a place they are decreasing in popularity is in the Los Angeles school district (Zubrzycki).
