Banned books can be great books that teach people important messages. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is a biography about Maya Angelou's life and the tough situations she faced in life. Certain banned books such as Maya Angelou’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings should not be banned due to the importance of the topics and situations the author talks about.
The book I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings teaches people about situations that have happened in our society and are still happening currently. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings talks about the topics of racism, teen pregnancy, and rape. This book also talks about how these unsettling and traumatizing situations affect a person. After Maya was raped she refused to speak showing us something that can happen to people after going through something as horrible as being raped. Situations like these aren't exactly talked about as often and when they are most of the time people are always looking down on the people that it has happened to not the person who did it. But because people don't like discussing these topics people become unaware of these situations but even when they are talked about people ignore them or try to censor them. …show more content…

This book sends the message that even though everything you have been through is rough you still have a future out there for you and even with self-doubts it’s okay to push forward.
