The history we read is written by the winner.Through the years this has been mainly positive facts about each country. Hitler banning books in WW2, the banning of 1984 for being pro-communist, and China hiding the fact that Tiananmen Square ever happened are just a few examples. However now in the 21st century a lot of history is being rewritten to include more representation from varying countries. One of the films that is helping this movement is Black Panther, a 2018 action adventure film, directed by Ryan Coogler. In which T’challa gets overthrown as king by an outsider and inevitably has to fight for his rightful spot as king. These allusions are created to put a spotlight on these events in history. As almost all of the European countries participated in the scramble for Africa and most countries changed history to make it look like they weren’t the bad guys. This leads to discrimination, racism, and problems against African Americans as people aren’t learning from the past. Which is exactly what happens with Killmonger as he grows to become the main antagonist in Black Panther.
The color green, dialogue, and Nakia demonstrates how underrepresentation of people can hurt leaders of countries. Nakia is one of the side characters in Black Panther, specifically she is T’challa’s love interest. Zuri tells him that his uncle betrayed T’chaka, T’challa’s father, and was seen taking vibranium out of Wakanda to help people in America. In that flashback N’jobu said, “All over the world our people suffer because they don’t have the tools to fight back.” (1:05:58-1:06:04). N’jobu says this to point out the obvious in our world and in Black Panther; the world can change and help African Americans, yet many are unwilling to. Like T’chaka who later in the scene kills N’jobu, his own brother, because he felt like helping African Americans outside of Wakanda, would destroyed Wakanda. However T’chaka was blind to the facts that African Americans were victims of racism, discrimination, and police brutality outside of Wakanda. This resulted in T’chaka doing what a lot of countries already do, getting rid of opposing ideology for their own benefit. T’chaka chose to be selfish and greedy when in reality he could have just saved many more lives by listening to N’jobu. As today’s society and history are ruined because other people/races think they are superior and
