Former President Barack Obama delivered a speech to the people of Chicago back in 2008 just after he had won the Presidential Election. This was an important speech as not only was it delivered to the people of his home town and the rest of the world to later see, it served the purpose of acknowledging his victory, thanking those who supported him and assuring Americans of his presidency and instilling the doubters with confidence in him and his team. When he had won, there was a large portion of people were not happy with the fact that their new president was a Black American and hence for this speech to be memorable and impactful, he needed to make us of different tools literary tools. This factor increased his relatability as it presented him as just another American citizen, it also gave the chance for the audience to feel personally connected to him by sharing some more ‘Personal’ details on his character. In his speech he brought up American History and some struggles faced by different communities within the country. In doing this not only did he display his knowledge in that field, it also sent the message that he was taking all this into consideration in his leadership. He had mentions of war in his speech, appealing very strongly to the emotions of the audience. Within his speech he also addressed the issues in which he, during his campaign, had promised to try and resolve such as unemployment, racial disparities, LGBTQ+ issues and women’s rights. Toward the end of his speech he brought up a case of a 106 woman who had lived through slavery and the age in which her vote didn't matter because of her gender as well as the colour of her skin. Not only did he reassure the public of his deliverance in his promises and to address his race in the role that he was now taking on.
