Barney Stinson: a psychologist’s dream and most fretted nightmare. He is a beloved character from the long running American sitcom, “How I Met Your Mother,” but a prime example of several theories discussed in the field of psychology. A quick summary would say he is a narcissistic womanizer with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and an addiction to self pleasure. He presented this throughout the entirety of the nine seasons with utmost consistency and very occasional character development. It could be stated that overall Barney Stinson is Freud’s theory, the nurture versus nature ideology, and a prime example of narcissistic personality disorder.

For Barney, this is observed in his obsession with laser tag. Since he plays against children, he his sure he will always win and uses this praise for a sense of accomplishment that narcissists crave. Extraversion is very clear in his personality, as he is very outgoing, assertive, and engaging. He is also not shy to openness as he has so many wild ideas and fantasies that he tries throughout the show. He takes challenges as an adventure that he is willing to attempt and succeed, no matter the occasion. Agreeableness is a more controversial aspect of him as he never cares for others, but truly trusts and comes through for his friends and family. “Neuroticism is also shown in his self-conscious tendencies that he attempts to hide through his ego, but this could be argued that he is too outgoing and fun to exhibit the emotions of neuroticism (Medium).” In a smaller bit of the show, he also portrays conscientiousness through his intelligence and high status in a wealthy job even without knowing his true
