Baron D Hydraulic Model Of Determinism

Throughout this year I have grown to be a “hard” psychological determinist and will be arguing that free will is at no time compatible with universal physical determinism. I will be proving that these two “things” cannot co-exist by disproving three theories that say they have potential for them to do so or can. Baron d’Holbach’s material metaphysical view on free will has both positive and negative connotations that I will be explaining further in the essay. Alfred Jules Ayer’s compatibilist way of thinking provides insufficient evidence to give his argument credibility. Finally, Roderick Chisholm’s libertarian causation way of thinking is an unsatisfactory ideology.

Causal determinism is the view that the “future is determined by the past in combination with the laws of nature. There are no genuine ‘branching paths.’ ” D’Holbach’s view goes even further in the materialist way of thinking on this, and says everything is made up of matter and motion. Matter behaves according to the laws of nature, therefore we move according to the laws of nature. If we had free will this would not be the case, as a result we do not have free will. Although D’Holbach’s view and my take on the Hydraulic Model share similarities they share even greater differences. D’holbach’s main focus is that our minds and bodies are linked to the laws of nature that hold us to the planet. My view on the other hand could exist on a metaphysical level that D’Holbach’s could not. For arguments sake imagine the laws of nature were changed entirely, and humans and their mental states still remained the same in this new existence. These mental states would persist to guide us to act as though we did when the laws of nature where still intact or the same. This would show that regardless of the laws or any other types of changes, your prior mental states from the moment your brain is formed determine things for you. And the only way to change this would be to be able to look at our mental states prior to them deciding things for
