The Barton Engine Works Company is a small local company located downtown Bartonville. Barton Engine Works is the largest employer within the small community. The company has been a part of the community for over 50 years; therefore, the company is a very strong organization. Because of unforeseen circumstances, Jane Payne has been promoted as the new head of the Barton Company. As with every company, it is important to implement new ways of strengthening the company’s brand. As the new head of the company, Jane must successfully open all forms of communication. It has been shown that Bill was very comfortable within the market, which is a good thing; however, it is also important for companies to be dominant while also building on strong products. Both Bill and his son were right about their overview of the company’s market position. In 1999, the company made more income than the following two years. To increase sales, Jane will need to increase the company’s advertising campaign because it will possibly help with Barton’s market position, and bring in new customers. It has been brought to Jane’s attention that the company has been issued a lawsuit for discrimination. Jane was unaware of the lawsuit because the company was still under leadership of Bill. The discrimination lawsuit was filed by Mr. Alvarez claiming that the company overlooked him as a less qualified applicant. Mr. Alvarez also claimed that discrimination by the Barton Company has been happening over a long period of time. Employment discrimination is a concern in businesses; therefore it should not be taken lightly. According to Jennings, employment discrimination has been one of the fastest growing legal issues over the past decade (Jennings, 2012). This is a major obstacle Jane must attack. Although the lawsuit was filed before her promotion, it is now her problem to handle. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VII) makes it unlawful to discriminate against someone on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex or religion (The United States Department of Justice, 2015). Jane should investigate the accusations pertaining to the lawsuit immediately. The Human Resource Department should also be advised to assist Jane in the investigation process
