Batman The Dark Knight rises is a Christopher Nolan film about Batman. Nolan draws multiple influences for this film including the source of the story DC comic books and many features of Charles Dicken's novel Tale of Two Cities. To begin, both stories contain letters meant as private confessions being revealed to the public. In Tale of Two Cities, the letter reveals the specifics of his encounter with Evrémonde and that Evrémonde had raped a girl and killed her brother. This letter causes Charles Darnay to be sentenced to death for the crimes of his family. In Batman, the letter is written by Jim Gordon after Harvey Dent is corrupted and becomes a murderer. By Bane exposing the truth about Harvey Dent, he essentially sentenced the image of Harvey Dent to death. Therefore creating a parallel between Batman and Tale of Two Cities. Another parallel between the two is the belief by specific characters that vengeance upon a particular person will bring justice and balance to life again. In Tale of Two Cities Madame Defarge is consumed by vengeance and leads the revolution to overthrow the elites because of Charles Darnay’s father who raped Madame Defarge’s sister and murdered her brother. Her hatred for the Evrémondes fuels her to lead the revolution, plan the arrest of Darnay, and storm the Bastille to uncover the letter condemning the Evrémondes and therefore Darnay. In Batman, Talia becomes obsessed with exacting revenge upon Batman for the murder of her father Ra’s al Ghul. This lust for vengeance leads Talia to tear the city apart causing Batman to suffer.
