Justice Delayed is Justice Denied Many are familiar with the justices of Batman. He defeats the Joker, protects Gotham City, and refuses to kill. However, when dealing with criminals, is that for the better? Many see Batman as heroic for refusing to kill, but when the Joker is put in prison, he escapes, Gotham experiences more damage, fatalities, and carnage, and Batman has to come to the rescue for the hundredth time. Would it not be better if the Joker was no longer around to wreak havoc; to put an end to the madness? These fictional stories highlight many realities of society. One such factor is the execution of execution. Under the “Fifth Amendment [of the Constitution it] states that a person cannot be prosecuted or punished without being given due process. Due process is a person's legal right under the law which includes being served with notice, and having the right to be heard and defend [themselves].” (Grabel) In the current system, criminals get one time to appeal sentencing, they are given the chance to prove themselves worthy of life and ability to change before a court. However, after all the appeal processes and rights, they are still sentenced to execution, and then sit on death row for fifteen years. With the long wait, the death penalty instantly becomes void and no longer holds the same weight it was meant for. Consider the title. Justice delayed is justice denied. This means that if legal compensation is available for a suffered party, but is not forthcoming in a timely fashion, it is effectively the same as having no redress at all. It becomes void. Prosecuted criminals have been given their notice, have stated and lost their defence, they have been sentenced, and should be executed. Many disagree saying, "What if we execute people more quickly? That would be a terrible reason to do it."(Hernandez) If a criminal has been sentenced, they have been sentenced. The court as evaluated the evidence, the defense, and concluded them guilty. Then why does the government not see it through? If the death penalty is to be productive it must be executed. To be tough and sentence is to be tough and execute. Think of the example of Doctor William Petit. He must have suffered so much at the loss of his family and home. The living criminals are being cared for. They get warm food, a bed to rest, and a roof over their heads. The
