Riddle Me This! Hit me hard and I will crack, but you will never stop me from staring back. What could I be? A mirror, of course. This riddle here is full of mystery, wouldn’t you say? Just as this riddle, there are many mysteries around us. Now, the word mystery doesn’t quite cut it, that is when the word enigma takes its place. By definition, enigma is an item or situation that is considered either a mystery, puzzling or difficult to understand. The term’s origin itself is from the Greek word in the mid sixteenth century ainos, to ainissesthai, to ainigma, to finally enigma in Latin. Enigmas are in more places than anyone could think. Enigmas are also known to be called puzzles, which are easy to solve as soon as you find the correct perspective. Enigmas or enigmatic plots are seen to be used in novels, movies, and television shows alike. A famous television character, the “Riddler” was known for his brilliant use of enigma against his arch nemesis, “Batman,” the orphaned superhero of Gotham. The “Riddler” was portrayed to be mentally unstable and borderline schizophrenic in his use of enigmatic tactics. Like reality television versus high culture items like ballet, or Beethoven’s symphony. It’s considered an elaborate enigma to determine where exactly to draw the line between high and low culture, or what’s considered higher or lower on a scale. For example, which one is considered higher culture: William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, or Hamilton Play? Even something like the movies Titanic versus The Notebook will become more difficult to decipher where exactly on the scale everything
