Canada had an important role in the Liberation of the Netherlands from September 1944 to April 1945; in order to be successful, they faced some challenges by the Germans including the deaths and casualties of many soldiers, uneasy fighting conditions, as well as dangerous land for the troops. Casualties were not only physical but emotional and psychological as well. Fighting conditions were mostly impacting transportation, adding more difficulty to the war than there already was. The troops were also constantly in danger because the Nazi’s were powerful. However, all challenges aside, the soldiers managed to successfully liberate Holland.

In the Battle of the Scheldt, Canadian and British soldiers fought a series of assaults against Germany using small boats. Aside from the use of boats, the movement of men, tanks and other equipment was restricted due to narrow roadways. In addition, land along the Scheldt River was soggy, sometimes-flooded, situated below sea level, or enclosed by barriers. Flooding was caused by explosions from the German attacks in or around the water. An entry from a Highland Light Infantry of Canada War diary gave evidence, stating: “Breaches in the dykes blown by the enemy caused extensive flooding during the night. A road built by RCE to D coy area was washed out and the coy HQ surrounded by water. Some of our outpost positions had to be abandoned as the water continued to rise at the rate of 2 to 3 inches per hour during the day.” The wetness of the land however, was not the only obstacle because most of the transportation routes such as roads and bridges were broken, also due to the explosions; soldiers would go a certain route and come to the realization that they need to turn around and go another way because of the damaged roads. Another danger was the destroyed infrastructure since there was a high risk of buildings collapsing at any time.
