Anna Schweigardt Ms. Lavender Language Arts, 8B 7 February 2017 Battle of Saratoga The Revolutionary War has gone on for a few years now. Battle after battle between the Americans and British soldiers. The Americans have been having a hard time fighting with the British because of lack of supplies. The colonists were losing hope for defeating the British until one day in October of 1777 when the Battle of Saratoga changed it all. The Americans won the battle. The Battle of Saratoga was the major turning point in the war. Americans had clever war strategy. The soldiers knew that the British were making their way towards Saratoga, so they slowed them down by destroying bridges and leaving fallen trees on the roads. Since the Americans knew of Burgoyne's coming, the American soldiers wanted to try sabotage his forces. With the slowing down of the British, the Americans had time to prepare for when the British would arrive. General Gates lead the troops at Saratoga and he knew when to and when not to attack. Gates had scouts stationed in trees to spy on the British. General Gates told Morgan's riflemen to fire shots at a regiment of British troops in which the riflemen killed or wounded many of the British. On October 9, the official Battle of Saratoga started. Burgoyne with his officers had an army of men waiting to attack the Americans. Gates found the British waiting on a field for the Americans, so he sent a regiment to fight back. The battle lasted all day and in the end, the Americans captured a portion of the British's defense which they won the battle. After the battle, Burgoyne thought about how he could defeat the Americans, but there was no way he could, so he decided to surrender. Burgoyne created "The Convention of Saratoga" which neither was a surrender or treaty. The British wouldn't fight anymore if the Americans let them go
