The article entitled “Becoming a Marihuana User” written by Howard S. Becker discusses the path and steps an individual must experience before they can use marihuana for pleasure. This article’s priority is to illustrate the progression of transformations in experience and outlook, which lead to the use of marihuana for enjoyment. The author explains how a person can only use marihuana for pleasure, once they have learned to smoke it properly and get “high”, recognize the effects of the drug and be aware they are high, and then find pleasure in how the drug makes them feel. I found this article extremely interesting and enjoyable because it is a topic that I take pleasure in reading about in my spare time. The use and effects of marihuana has always been a common debate topic for my friends and I to engage in. Prior to reading this article, I had a preconceived attitude of what marihuana was and the image of somebody who engages in its use. However, once reading this article I learned how everyone has the potential to become a marihuana user if they follow the steps mentioned above. Although this is a proficient sample of the population, in my opinion not enough interviews were done.
