I was watching the Tavis Smiley Show and was happy to see a mutual interest in enabling a healthy environment. Additionally, when I first turned to the channel they was talking about mental illness and I appreciated the insight. I believe they complimented the conversation with their perceptions. I did better than I thought, but I am concerned that the counseling process would be different in real life. It would be beneficial to learn ways to help the client to open up even when there is resistance. Another challenge that one may face not being knowledgeable of the many intervention. From the ideas and techniques that Mrs. Perez used, I realized how these interviews could be helpful if utilized and applied in the proper way. This clinical experience has really helped me to sharpen my communication skills and realize just how important it is to understand mental health. We are told multiple times in class that mental health issues can be seen on any floor and that is the truth. I’ve seen patients in my older adult clinical on the pulmonary floor suffer from issues that range from anxiety to bipolar disorder and depression. Being able to understand how to approach people that suffer from these types of illnesses, allows us, the nurses, to give the patient the best care that we can.
