General Description:

Beijing is the capital city of the People’s Republic of China and has a population of over 21 million people making it one of the most populated cities in the world. The majority of the people living in the city are Chinese and there aren’t as many immigrants living in Beijing. Beijing is known for being a major political and historical city due to being under several dynasties and having revolutions and being under a communist government. Beijing is one of the largest cities in the world and is also one of the most populated areas in China. As well, Beijing can be categorized as a megacity because its population is over 10 million people. Beijing hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics and will be looking forward to host the 2022 Winter Olympics. The city has an open …show more content…

The government is taking measures to relieve some of these problems by implementing several plans but in various aspects, it isn’t very effective. Thereby, Beijing hopes to become a more sustainable city in the near future due to numerous governmental or privatized plans being implemented.

Housing:

Each year, rural-urban migration is evident as millions of Chinese citizens move from rural areas to urban areas. Therefore, more than half of China’s population which is about 690 million have been living in cities since 2011. Over the past two decades, several Chinese cities have faced unwanted privatization as the government has sold rental housing at discounted prices and ended its provision of public housing. Due to high migration rates and privatization, real estate prices have skyrocketed with the average housing price increasing by 250%. As a result, most Beijing residents cannot afford houses and approximately 17% of families have experienced housing difficulties according to a 2010 census.
