Jenna Chong December, 4th 2017 5B To Identify as an America What is independence? Most define it as simply having freedom from being governed or ruled by another country. Which is very important in today’s world, but what stands out is the freedom and what we choose to do with it. The gap between the year 1776 when America was declared independent and the present year 2017, estimates to two hundred and forty one (241) years of freedom to its citizens. Therefore, the revolution to make America great was a success for the most part, but recently majority of Americans have lost the meaning behind freedom. It entails devoted love, support and defense of one’s country. As a nation, Americans are patriotic people and they are definitely not afraid to show it. From wearing the American flag as clothes, singing the national anthem in sport arenas, and risking lives through U.S military forces, the word bravery is used widely across this country. Courage in the U.S is commendable, but can a divided nation agree on the definition of patriotism? Some think being patriotic is simply being white, while others think you must be a veteran to be one. Some think being a republican is more patriotic than being a democrat. All of these distinctive beliefs sprouted during World War II, when the population identified as patriots. Decades later, we swelled with national pride when our country somehow landed two men on the moon. But that spirit waned as our country's political climate grew more partisan, fueled by echo chambers in the media and on the Internet. Thus, resulting in a "patriotism gap" between our major political parties. Although, if we choose to believe that the word patriot can blossom again and regain its meaning in our society, not only will we lead by example and spread the message of unity, but we can also help repair national equality through the love of the
