War, Labor, and Capitalism Reflection Upton Sinclair wrote a novel in 1906 titled, “The Jungle”. The book focused on the harsh working conditions of immigrants in the United States. Sinclair wasn’t the only person who focused on and exploited companies with horrendous working conditions - Emma Goldman was a young, outspoken feminist who was jailed many times for her speeches calling out the upper class. One of Goldman’s more famous speeches is titles, “Patriotism: A Menace to Liberty” (1908) (Zinn 270).
Universal moral obligations are not consistent with being patriotic for one 's country. We can be both patriotic and critical in the ways outlined by Nussbaum. Within Bladwins reading there is a sharp contrast when discussing America and patriotism. "Wherever you have turned, James, in your short time on this earth, you have been told where you could go and what you could do (and how you could do it) and where you could do it and whom you could marry. I know that your countrymen do not agree with me about this, and I hear them saying “You exaggerate.”
They show patriotism because they simply love their country. It doesn't matter if you're from a different country, patriotism is a needed quality. Patriotism is everything here. In America, it is easier to land a job opportunity here.
A patriot, by a simple definition, is an individual who vehemently supports their country. The word has a generally positive connotation, however, patriotism does not necessarily have to coincide with a positive national situation. There is also the question of how patriotism coincides with notions of national identity. Extreme, or misguided forms of patriotism can lead to terrible outcomes. In the case of the founding fathers, their patriotism did not extend to women, African Americans, or Native
Nationalism Nationalism, the feeling of love, unity and patriotism towards one’s country, filled the emotions of Americans during the Battle of the New Orleans where Americans defeated the British. During this period the States used the liberal nationalism to solve their differences and put aside self-interests then united to form one nation. The unity brought great success to America. Further, nationalism was shown through the rising of the American Flags and people singing the national anthem as a show of pride and identity (Lind, 2010). The idea of nationalism can lead to people spreading certain ideologies that their country is proud of to other countries.

I am so so deeply saddened by this election. Everyone knows the disparaging remarks Trump has made about minorities, women, and the disabled. I thought this alone would have prevented him from even receiving the Republican Nomination, but alas, I was wrong. People defend this kind of speech by saying he's just speaking up against political correctness. What about patriotic correctness?

Catch-22 does not present a strong sense of patriotism during the film, America is rarely mentioned and represents more a lack of fighting to the main character than anything else. The film almost seems to mock the patriotism that drives young men to enlist for war. They go to war and die, Yossarian himself is forever worrying about the people trying to kill him and at one point he says “why are they shooting at me?” and Clevinger responds “They're shooting at everyone”. Viewing every attack as a personal attack where the patriotic line is to see it is an attack on America.
In the United States, serving in the military is seen as a model of true patriotism, and rightfully so. Service members train for 10 weeks in their transition from civilian to a soldier. They train to be able to endure all the hardships that may come their way. Service members have to be in the best physical shape to serve and because of all that they do, they are thought of as brave and selfless people. Service members make extreme sacrifices to defend our country and act selflessly by doing so; it is fitting that they are seen as heroes by many Americans.
Another crucial element that should be noted is the differences in terms of their attitude toward America. On the surface level, the majority of Japanese had a rather positive feeling against the US as a new authority that had replaced the prewar military dictatorship. It does not mean, however that anti-Americanism did not exist entirely. The experience of military defeat and occupation did engendered antagonism against America among both the right and the left. Particularly for the left, it was strengthened by the communist ideology of the Cold War.
Our nation always has questions about our prodigious country. Therefore, why do we sing the national anthem? What is an American? Is the American Dream still possible? What is Patriotism?
Nationalism plays an important role in culture, especially today. Nationalism in culture highlights the diversity of a society. A main idea of cultural nationalism is the shared thoughts of people in a society, such as, political views, religious beliefs, sharing a language, and recognizing certain holidays. Orwell states, “Nationalism is not only defined as alignment to a political entity; it can also encompass a religion, race, ideology or any other abstract idea.”
Given the topic of Patriotism and Politics in an Election Year, instantly the idea of how Americans are so much patriotic in an election year comes to mind. I was only 9 years old when President Obama was elected, so I don 't remember very much. I will use the most recent election between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton as the basis of my essay. Public displays, social media, watching debates and staying upto date on current events, and voting are a few examples of patriotism during election years. I believe that citizens are more patriotic in an election year.
