Walter Mitty’s life was very boring so, he likes to daydreaming about something exited. For example, he imagined that the firing squad shooted him while he was smoking in front of the drugstore. Many people have this problem with not being able to read for long because they start clicking away to other websites. There are several bloggers with this dilemma who stopped reading books altogether. Even when they read, they just skim through it. A study
In the reading “Amusing Ourselves to Death” by Neil Postman, the most surprising aspect is when he talks about how people do not remember anything they watched on television. According to Postman, Stern said 51 percent of viewers could not recall a single item of news a few minutes after viewing a news program on television” (p152). This is surprising because I believe that a lot of people could recall the news from television, especially when the anchor mention the news story more than once. One time before a commercial break and when the anchor is talking is about it. And when there is breaking news, the anchor spends most of the newscast talking about the topic.
I remember I was not like this when I was in elementary school; I used to love reading and read new books almost every single
People would rather watch TV, sit on their phones, or just go outside than actually pick up a good book. This is a stressing matter, and enough individuals don’t acknowledge this growing
I began with an endless list of books I wanted to read as soon as possible, and I had incorporated a portion of my day dedicated to reading. Even before the school year started I always enjoyed reading, but now I find it difficult to open a book; not because I do not enjoy it, but because I have prioritized that time for other things. As I am reflecting on this now, I have become disappointed in myself that I am drifting away from one of my favorite and beneficial hobbies. I believe this change is a result of discouragement due to my excitement for the summer and the school year coming to an end. Furthermore, for the last few months I have become more stressed with my AP World History Exam, the second semester finals, and track coming to an end, leading to me pushing away the things I enjoy most.
Many struggling readers in middle school are disengaged from reading. In addition to low achievement, these students can have low motivation for reading. Many factors contribute to disengagement in middle school. Reading instruction is often disconnected from content, making reading tedious. Textbooks are formidable, and students are expected to respond to text with formal criticism or outlining rather than personal reactions.
While it may be true that even if a student is reading Sports Illustrated, they will still become more literate and reflective than if they hadn’t read at all, it is also true that the student is then less likely to read the same desired material outside of class because they are already being forced to read it inside of class. Moreover, if class time is spent reading something such as Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers: The Story of Success, the student will be more inclined to read Sports Illustrated outside of class; thus, increasing their reading time altogether. On the report of Engaging Schools: Fostering High School Students’ Motivation to Learn, “studies have shown that students who read outside of school become better readers (Anderson, Wilson, and Fielding, 1988; Fielding, 1994; Guthrie, Schafer, Wang, and Afflerbach, 1995)” (64). Therefore, by engaging in materials which the students may not be interested in during the school day, they will be more likely to read other subject matters outside of school and consequently increase their reading
Everyone has been there –to the point where you are so stressed out that you can barely think; where you are worried about how you fared on an exam; where you are contemplating whether your friends are sincere with you or not; where you are trying to forget a recent quarrel with someone dear to you; where you are simply too taxed to do anything productive. At this point in time, many will do something else to help take their mind off their current predicaments and depressions in life by escaping the problems brought by this reality they are living in. For some, that something is reading. For others, it is drinking. Now, in our current generation, this list has expanded to include another method of finite escape, video games.
It is true, kids love to play. But, playing all of the time is not at all possible as it can affect their studies, but what if they are enjoying and studying at the same time? The latest edition of Dr. Spack - "revised and fully expanded for a new century" as the cover reports - has this to say of video games: "The best that can be said of them is that they may help promote eye-hand coordination in children. The worst that can be said is that they sanction, and even promote aggression and violent responses to conflict. But what can be said with much greater certainly is this: most computer games are a colossal waste of time." But where reading is concerned, the advice is quite different: "I suggest you begin to foster in your children a love of reading and the printed word from the start.... What is important is that your child be an avid
