This is evident in the way Perry approaches the boy's situation. Overall, he was compassionate and caring towards him. In addition, the video on empathy introduces the concept of mirror neurons. The concept states," when we observe another person's actions, our neurons light up as if we have experienced the action ourself(Rifkin). " For example, when Perry ate a piece of muffin, he then offered it to the boy.
I empathise with Walt because his son died while they were on bad terms, although he knew Chris loved him, Walt had no time to show Chris how much he loved him. Which would be hard to deal with, this is why I empathise with Walt McCandless.
Tension is created when two people have conflicting ideas/perspectives. This is displayed in the stories “The Elevator,” by William Sleator and “Abuela Invents the Zero,” by Judith Ortiz. Both authors portray how tension is created through the differences of perspective that their character. Opong uses anecdotes in her essay to make her readers understand that empathy is being expressed in the situation from both sides and acknowledge the possibility of the customer not seeing diana. Opong describes an example that is told from a first-person point of view and includes personal thoughts and feelings of the person experiencing the event. Opong states, “Diana felt a little frustrated when the customer didn’t hold the door open for her, but there is a good chance they didn’t see her and it’s not a big deal” (3).
He arrives to work and see's Pino, his coworker, and son of Sal, give him a dirty look and said, " you are late". Pino is a racist person who does not like black people and does not get along with Mookie. In contrast, Vito is a nice and respectful individual who is friends with Mookie. It is with these four individuals that Sal's pizzeria had become so well known in New York. Sal is a person who likes to help everyone and is a well-rounded individual.
Not only can we learn from the characters in To Kill a Mockingbird, but also in the poem Sympathy because we can relate to what the author is talking about. Through these examples, it is clear that authors can best create empathy in their readers by developing strong characters that go through problems that the reader can relate to or learn
The film Boyz N the Hood is a story about life in South Central Los Angeles. The film was wrote and directed by John Singleton in 1991. I chose this movie because of its relevance to the course and how it reflects pop culture in that time period. The opening line in the movie “one out of every twenty-one Black American males will be murdered in their lifetime” really catches the audience attention (Nicolaides & Singleton, 1991). This movie goes into detail and shows the life of three young males living in the hood of Los Angeles battling a life surrounded by drugs, violence, and questions of race.
In George Saunders’ essay from The Guardian, he states, “We often think that the empathetic function in fiction is accomplished via the writer’s relation to his characters, but it’s also accomplished via the writer’s relation to his reader” (The Guardian). In Kurt Vonnegut’s story “Harrison Bergeron”, we can see this idea shown through the reader’s connection with Harrison. Vonnegut uses the main character of the story, Harrison Bergeron, as a symbol of empathy by allowing the reader to relate to his desire for individuality.
“Thinking like a freak” is the way of thinking which is illogical, foolish and the most risky. According to Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner,”thinking like a freak” is very easy, but most people don’t choose it to solve their problems. There are three reasons why people usually hold the idea off from“thinking like a freak”, include: protecting own reputation, making predictions, and getting feedbacks. The first reason why people usually hold the idea off from “thinking like a freak” is protecting their own reputation. Most of people’s reputations are very high and “thinking like a freak” breaks the rule of each people.
The world needs more empathy. Empathy is not really shown around us. What the word “empathy” means is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. S.E. Hinton created empathy by showing two sides of the story in The Outsiders, and Eugenia W. Collier created empathy throughout life events in ‘’Marigolds.’’

There are more than just one quote showing the use of empathy in this chapter, for example “ Something was making him nibble at the edge of stale ideas as if his sturdy physical egotism no longer nourished his peremptory heart.” The Great Gatsby pg 14, this shows the narrator's empathy for Tom. He is saying that after the dinner with his cousin he feels that Tom has something on his mind that is in a way eating at his mind, and making him feel maybe sad or as if something is missing. Respect is an important life skill needed to coexist with others in our current society. Whether it’s in elementary school or high school, we’ve always been taught to treat each other with respect. Here at JFK, our motto is “respect is the key to success”. The word respect, in my opinion, means to treat each other equally despite their difference in opinions, race, gender, or any other aspect that could skew your opinion on who someone is. I agree with the school motto, however, it doesn’t hold true in our school and can definitely be improved upon.
