Course Description/Goals
While teens are beginning to grow more and more each day it is important to educate them on sexual education and different sexual orientations. Many schools bypass the thought of educating our students on sex and how it can have the potential to be deadly despite what beliefs they may have. During this course students will explore the importance of abstinence as well as obtaining the knowledge of proper and effective contraceptives for sexual activity all while learning the consequences of unprotected sex. Sex education must be designed to address individuals across their lifespans which means that this form of education should give them the tools to understand their bodies and effectively communicate to others respectively

Also, students will be provided with the opportunities to help develop relationships and communication skills to help them explore their own understanding of values and relationship skills. This course also gives students a chance to develop healthy sexual habits that will soon follow in their adult lifestyle which will in return get students to understand the importance of this course. Lastly, students will learn how condoms & birth control can help prevent pregnancy and the transmission of sexually transmitted infections. As Frances Clark said, “Meet the student where they are, not where you are, and not where you want them to be, but where they really are” (Glennon/Pennington, 2013). One of the most important parts of teaching is meeting students where they are, not where you think they should be. It is very easy to paint a picture of where the learners should be, but that is not always the case. It is more important to meet them where they are and move them forward than it is to continue full speed ahead. Teaching sexuality education is an exciting endeavor, you are covering a topic most learners are curious about but may or may not have access to accurate information. This is a topic that will follow students for the rest of their lives, be wise in how you teach it. The ultimate goal as a sex education educator is to help the students taking this course to feel more comfortable with themselves, as well as to educate them on means to keep themselves save. One of the best ways to do this is to keep lines of communication open, and make sure the information you are giving your students is accurate and relevant.
