Rough Beginnings It was 1915 and the music scene was just getting hot. New Orleans was busting at the seam with young cats prowling the streets, lurking in seedy after-hours clubs looking to get a wild jam session in before the night was through. An insanely talented and equally arrogant ragtime pianist by the name of Jelly Roll Morton began to play with a different kind of flavor that drove audiences crazy, and with that the invention of Jazz was born. The heavy syncopated beats making your pulse jump, the bluesy lilt of a melody lapping lazily at your senses; this was the time to be alive.
Jazz has shaped the world we know today. Jazz would have never been as popular without the help of the famous musicians: Jelly Roll Morton, Joe King Oliver, Sidney Bechet, Louis Armstrong, and Duke Ellington. These people helped spread the new genre through radio, railroads, and the records that they played. Where did this all start? The jazz age began in New Orleans where a certain King was born.

A hero can be anyone from Gandhi to your classroom teacher, anyone who can show courage when faced with a problem. A hero is someone who is willing to help others in his or her best capacity (Martin).” Respectively, anyone can be a hero but heroes are classified as people with aspects including Faith, loyalty, modesty, courtesy, honor, and bravery. Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary defines a hero as “a person who is admired for great or brave acts of fine qualities.”
This label I’m most intrigued with is a subsidiary of Universal Music group known as Motown Records. Founded by Berry Gordy, the label was originally known as Tamla Records, but it changed its’ name after suggestions from the Ford assembly line. Now the title Motown fits the city that it was established in, Detroit, Michigan which is also known as the Motor City. Motown Records and its’ artists were influential in the integration of popular music and added soul and culture that had not been seen before. Significance can be found in the fact Motown Records wasn’t simply trying to achieve commercial success, but trying to tell their story and affect the community.
When you hear the word “hero,” what names come to mind? What exactly makes a hero? One thing I’m certain of is that Andrew Carnegie was definitely NOT one of them. A hero is someone with integrity, concern for others, and protects. Carnegie, a selfish but self-made, made poor and unethical actions and decisions, not owning the traits of a hero.

Motown was the first African-American-owned record label to achieve widespread success, and it had a profound impact on American culture. Motown was responsible for introducing the world to the music of African American artists such as The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, and Stevie Wonder. Motown's music was a unique blend of soul, pop, and R&B, and it was characterized by its catchy melodies, smooth harmonies, and polished production. Motown's music was a reflection of the African American experience, and it spoke to a generation of young people who were searching for their own identity.
“A true hero isn’t measured by the size of their strength, but by the strength of their heart.” A hero is a person that does something to help or they can also save someone 's life. One example of, being a hero is Darry because he takes care of Ponyboy and Sodapop. Another example, of being a hero is Johnny when he saved Ponyboy and the little kids. A further example, of being a hero is Ponyboy when he also saved the little kid’s life and when he wanted to take the blame for killing Bob.
Motown is a well-known record corporation that was founded in the mid 1900’s. Motown has helped shape America due to its contributions since its founding. The corporation reshaped the music industry, signed and produced artist that would go on to become huge stars. Motown still has its fair share of action in today’s music industry. Motown is a living piece of history that has still remained relevant today.

Duke Ellington was a celebrated pianist and composer of a jazz orchestra. Born in 1899, Ellington proved himself to be an ardent American composer through his numerous orchestra functions until the end of his life in 1974. He is known to have made several collaborations with other jazz musicians through his world tours. Among Ellington’s achievements include changing the attitude of jazz and making it to be accepted as a form of art. Benny Goodman was also a jazz maestro who was born in 1909 and died in 1986.As a bandleader, Goodman was also reputed to have enhanced the image of jazz music, to the extent that it become respectable.
Heroes in our society are revered and respected as Joseph Campbell reminds us: “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself” (Joseph Campbell). Heroes exist in all societies and throughout history. Maybe they are not always on the news or from the movies, but their words and their actions never fail to resonate across their feats. A hero gives of himself and dedicates himself to causes which better others and their society unlike individuals who are self serving, greedy, and cruel.
Benny Goodman was a man who lead a very influential life, he was born on May 30th, 1909 and lived to be 77 years old. He was 1 out of 12 kids in his family and his parents had moved from Russia to get away from anti semitism. His mother never knew english but his father worked as a tailor to make money for their big family. When Benny was 10 years old he got sent to the Kehelah Jacob Synagogue by his father to study music. His had a disposition for the clarinet and he loved every second of it.
Andrew Carnegie was an entrepreneur who was born on November 25, 1835 in Dunfermline, Scotland. Many argue whether or not Carnegie was a hero. But what defines a hero? Three traits that define a hero are unselfishness, concern for others, and last of all their grit. Carnegie is one of the most heroic entrepreneurs for his generous effect on the communities he helped out.
A hero is someone who does a meaningful deed, worthy of remembrance and selflessly. Andrew Carnegie was a wealthy man. After he sold his steel company in 1900, he devoted the rest of his life giving money to charity. Did Andrew Carnegie’s generosity make him a hero? Andrew Carnegie was not a hero.
