Berry Gordy Created one of the biggest labels in Michigan which shaped the sound of Michigan. This came shortly after working with Brunswick Records who first bought one of Gordy’s songs. Berry Gordy also had some ties in the music industry due to one of his sisters’ labels titles Anna Records. In 1960 Motown formerly known as Tamla Records was fully established. Motown was operating inside a home in Detroit named Hitsville U.S.A. At this time Berry had Smokey Robinson along with The Miracles Jackie Wilson and Marv Johnson. Artist produced out of Motown Records include Marvin Gaye, Jackson Five, Stevie Wonder and The Supremes to name a few. It was also in this home, Berry was running his publishing company Jobete Music Publishing and various other labels. Shortly after that Berry began writing many songs which were recorded by one of Berry’s former boxing opponents Jackie Wilson and Marv Johnson. Both Jackie Wilson and Marv Johnson followed Berry as he was developing Motown. Berry Gordy was not alone in the early stages of his Motown empire, he had support from his sisters Gwen and Anna who were involved in the music industry themselves and provided networking opportunities for their brother Berry. Anna and Gwen used their beauty and charm to lure Marvin Gaye which led him to be a part of Motown. As stated before Berry took an independent label and expanded it in ways no one today can match. Berry made many sacrifices trying to keep everyone on Motown happy. Unfortunately, due to some flaws in his management style, not everyone was satisfied. Berry suffered a devastating lawsuit from his songwriting team Holland- Dozier-Holland, singer Brenda Holloway signed on with another
