Audrey McAleer Professor Styrt ENGL 240: Introduction to Film & Fiction 19 February 2023 Comparative Adaptation Essay After engaging with William Shakespeare’s Hamlet and its subsequent film adaptations, I am interested in analyzing Act 1 Scene 5. During this scene of the original play, the supposed spirit of Hamlet’s father reappears and obliges Hamlet to seek revenge without any further explanation. At this point, the ghost specifically advises Hamlet to execute his plan for making things “right,” and similarly, this motif is seen in both of Hamlet’s adaptations. Diving deeper into the play, I will consider how the treatment of Brangh’s film and The Lion King draw connections to this scene in the original text.
The theme power and corruption is explored in both ‘Hamlet’ and ‘The Lion King’. It is demonstrated that power can be used for the wrong reasons, and it results in families being torn apart. In Disney’s ‘The Lion King’, Scar the antagonist was denied from being king at birth, and therefore allowed the greed for power to override his personality. Jealousy was shown when Scar used Simba to cover up his murder of the king.
The Tragedy of Hamlet Prince of Denmark is authored by William Shakespeare, a seventeenth century playwright and poet known for his plays. It is a elaborate and full story with sympathetic and abhorrent characters the audience can understand all too well. It entails elements of betrayal, loyalty and inaction. The Lion King is a Disney movie with general plot of Hamlet where, a king is murdered for his throne. While the Lion King has some character and plot resemblances, its differences is what marks the gap between a children's movie to a richly told story.
Family can be deceiving and sometimes justice must be seeked in order to be served, Hamlet by William Shakespeare is a play about a young prince who seeks revenge against his uncle. The Lion King is a disney movie about a lion prince who disappears from his kingdom after his father dies. It has been widely debated on whether if the Lion King took inspiration from Hamlet or not. Both instances share key similarities that reader and watchers could pick out easily. In both stories the main characters have a similar background.
The moral background within the story of Hamlet and The Lion KIng are similar consisting that their plots also correspond. In every situation whether it be in Hamlet or The Lion KIng all the actors or cast members displayed an act of portraying a personality not seen at first glance. Which can be similar corresponding to “real” life that most people aren't who they appear to be. For example The King’s brother or Simba’s uncle took on this role of being responsible, caring, and a very big role model in the kingdom but in turn his real role in society was to play this manipulative, and inconsiderate being. The common people; however, followed the role he displayed not the role that made him who he was.

Shakespeare, a name most of us dread to hear as it comes with complicated language, and slag from an era that most don't know about. Even though most people want to finish a Shakespeare book for a school assignment, we don't seem to realize how many times movies have used Shakespeare plays as an inspiration for their own. The Lion King was an award-winning movie, people thought of an original, as it followed a young lion on his way of defeating his fears. This whole movie can be traced back to the play "Hamlet" by Shakespeare. Both the movie and the play have a lot in common.

Compare and Contrast Lion King and Hamlet After reading the book hamlet and watching the movie Lion King I discovered there were many similarities and differences. Both come from royalty and both fathers are killed by thier uncles that reaper as ghost with helpful advice, although in hamlet the uncle gets the Queen in lion king the uncle does not, hamlet is a tragedy but lion king was a happy ending. From an quick overlook of the two works, I cannot help but agree that they do in fact hold similarities. The common misconception that The Lion King was a remake of Hamlet typically derives from the identical plot found between both works.
Sharing another’s personal information to others is an act of betrayal that can have many different outcomes. In fact, all acts of betrayal have different outcomes based on the victim of the betrayal, and often times that victim can turn out to be yourself. Acts of betrayal are often done out of selfishness, jealousy, or even revenge to make one feel superior than the other. Many times acts of betrayal can be nonintentional because you may be in a state of mind where your feelings are getting the best of you and are not able to think straight. Whether or not the act of betrayal was intended, the victim of betrayal will react the same if it was intended or not because the action will still affect the victim in the same way.
“Run away Simba… run… run away and never return.” As many know this is one of the most iconic lines spoken by Scar in Disney's Lion King; and it sums up Scar's betrayal of his own family perfectly. Betrayal is a very common action many characters develope–in all forms of entertainment. Creators do this not just to push the plot forward but to develop a character–more often than not a villain–who they want the audience or reader to garner distrusting disgust towards. Shakespeare, being one of the greatest playwrights of all time, it makes perfect sense he would include themes of betrayal in his work; Lago is betrayal reincarnated.
