The theme of The Kite Runner is ever changing and adapting its evolution can be reflected within the characters within the book, more specifically the themes of Loyalty and Friendship,Betrayal,Guilt, concluding with eventual Redemption, these themes can be best represented with the use of characters such as Amir,Hassan, and Sohrab. Through Chapter 9, Amir’s response to the alley scene develops the theme of loyalty in the face of betrayal. It can be seen with Hassan's undying loyalty to Amir even when he was wronged and betrayed and can be exposed with the quote of Hassan taking responsibility for Amir falsely testifying against Hassan, “Did you steal that money? This is further established with Amir's quote about Soraya. Soraya Taheri was a better person than me. Courage was just one of them. (165) This line shows the immense guilt that Amir is accustomed to, being envious of Soraya and believing he is worse than others, his betrayal of Soraya gives him more guilt after Hassan, Amir feels weaker from not standing up in the alley and feels weaker the more guilt that gets added up. Amir through betraying Soraya is given an immense amount of guilt, developing the theme of betrayal and eventual guilt that comes with it. In the later parts of The Kite Runner (chapters 22-25) the theme of Redemption is shown in continuation with the themes of guilt and betrayal seen previously.
