Biblical Principles In Public Schools

Back in 1647, public schools were established in order to teach young children how to read, specifically how to read the Scripture. Because at the time, most of the demographic characteristics reflected that of Protestant Christians, public schools also followed the Protestant Christian faith in its daily teachings. These daily teachings included prayer, faith based values, and during Christmas programs, the singing of Christmas songs (Marshall, 2008, p. 28). Later, in 1791, congress added a clause to the First Amendment of the constitution. This clause stated that “congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof” (McElory, 2011). Despite the fact that the clause put an end to religious teachings in public schools; it is extremely important to teach biblical principles and values and there is still a way in which Christian educators can teach these today even if they are working in a public school. …show more content…

First, when Christian educators teach biblical principles and values to students at a young age, it can help youngsters become “effective decision-makers as adults” (Kulp, 2003). Secondly, youngsters who are taught biblical principles and values not only make better and effective decisions when they get older, but they later use these principles and values as standards that they rely on as a guide to help them determine how they should behave and act.
