In Big Horse Woman by Barbara Salvatore, chaos knocks on the door of the tribe and threatens everything that they have held sacred. Will Big Horse Woman listen to the voices of her ancestors? How are they calling her, and what are they telling her? Does she really have what it takes to preserve the knowledge passed down to her? Cultural heritage preserves different aspects of the way people think, behave, and celebrate. The tradition people have can also be a way you can preserve your heritage. If her ancestors start to call her, how are they doing it, what are they telling her, why are they calling her? Her ancestors would call her through the wind and through the dreams she had. They could be telling Big Horse Woman what she needs to know about the future, what is about to come, or what they want her to find out about or discover from them. An example of this is when the deadly spirits passed through Big Horse Woman “heeding its warning by leaving and never returning” (Salvatore 286). Does she have what it takes to preserve the knowledge passed down from generations? It is important to pass on knowledge to maintain a sense of identity and continuity. I think that Big Horse Woman would be able to preserve the knowledge from previous generations because of what she has learned through her parents, grandparents, Kika Tonga, and others in her tribe.
