Finally, the bravest moment of Bilbo Baggins is when he gives the Arkenstone to Bard and the Elven King in order for his friends to accept the deal that was to be made. This is brave because he was risking getting abandoned by his friends in order to
How Bilbo Baggins went from a Hobbit to a Hero. Bilbo Baggins has been a Hobbit for generations. Bilbo has become a Hero over a little bit of a time period. Bilbo loves adventures and staying home and being lazy. When Bilbo went on a hike and went to the valley he stumbled across trolls and elves.
Bilbo was brave, but not aggressively so. He was loyal, but that did not mean he never had doubts. Bilbo Baggins, of Bag End was an honorable Hobbit. He was also the greatest hero of them all, although he may not seem like it.
The “hero’s Journey” begins with a call to an ordinary individual to leave the ordinary world. This calls prompts the individual to leave the common life to venture into the realm of the unknown. The journey continues with the individual leaving the ordinary world to descend into the special world. The decent into the special world brings the individual through different adventures and experiences that reveal weakness and allow for strength and development to conquer those weaknesses. Bilbo baggins journey represents the “hero’s Journey”as he leaves the ordinary world as an ordinary hobbit, enters the special world as a developing warrior, and returns as an unexpected hero.
In the story “The Hobbit” Bilbo can be seen as the hero when he sacrifices his family’s name to be a part of the quest to get Thorin's gold back Bilbo's first approach is his attempt on stealing the trolls’ treasure. He later is met by the goblins, Gollum, elves, and spiders. Each fear he faces develops Bilbo as a hero, getting him ready for his greatest quest, stealing the treasure from Smaug.. Another example of Bilbo putting others before himself is the treasure he willing to give in order to bring peace to the men, elves, and dwarves. Last, but not least, Bilbo is willing to sacrifice his life for a cause bigger than himself.
In the Hobbit, Bilbo is morphed into a hero when he finds the ring. The reader can infer that the ring was key for him to become a hero because without it he most likely would not have been a hero in the situations where he was using the ring to save the others.
Tolkien uses Bilbo as a character who is not so easily corrupted by greed and is thus, able to carry the journey forward. Because of this virtue, Bilbo is able to see reason and make decisions that will benefit the greater good and stop useless violence. Even though this is not his home, Bilbo feels a sense of duty and risks his life to help the Dwarves. Unlike Odysseus, Bilbo is an unlikely hero who only sets out on the journey after being persuaded by Gandalf, a wizard. Bilbo relies mostly on his luck and on Gandalf to be saved.
In J.R.R Tolkien’s The Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins started out terrified of adventuring and thought his only superior skills in life were his ability to cook and blow smoke rings. Throughout the adventure his attributes are slowly morphed as they go through Joseph Campbell’s hero pattern. Bilbo is capable to make confident decisions and learns how to be devoted, generous and cares about more than his trivial life under the hill. Bilbo Baggins tried to maintain an everyday average normal hobbit life until adventure found him and put him on Joseph Campbell’s hero pattern. Bilbo goes through phases in Joseph Campbell’s hero pattern such as a refusal to call, when Gandalf and the dwarves greet him at his door, crossing of the first threshold, when Bilbo
(Tolkien #155). Bilbo also has many upbringings, his moms side is fancy, and likes to go on adventures. “And once in a while memories from the took-clan would go and have adventures”. The last supporting detail that shows how Bilbo is a hero is when the author states, “Farewell good thief he said, I go now to the halls of waiting to sit beside my fathers, until the world is renewed”. This is how Bilbo is an archetypal character and how he is a hero.
Many heroes are brutal in order to show their manliness or strength. Bilbo was strong because of his good heart and mind. He showed his kindness through his generosity, his level head, and his loyalty. Many would believe Bilbo agreed to the quest because of the treasure he knew he would receive. He did indeed earn the treasure, but out of the goodness of his heart, Bilbo heroically gave up all of it and shared with the people in need (44).
When you think of a mighty warrior most likely you think of a strong and brave male or female. Bilbo Baggins is quite the opposite. Bilbo is a tiny hobbit, scared of adventures and leaving his homely hobbit-hole. He may be tiny and scared but after everything that happened to him, he is a mighty warrior. In chapter one, he was told that he was chosen to go on a quest to get Thorin's gold back from the dragon Smaug after he and the twelve dwarves would have to slay Smaug.
He longs for adventure away from the hobbit hole. His life changes very quickly when he meets Gandalf and the 12 dwarves. After accepting Gandalf's challenge Bilbo goes on an action packed quest. Bilbo learns that there is more to him than he realizes and through hard work and dedication, he can accomplish almost anything. Overcoming these problems and learning more about himself helped Bilbo change from an ordinary, self-doubting hobbit into a clever, courage-filled, loyal hero. In the beginning, Bilbo has no desire to go on an adventure of any kind, but he quickly learns about the cleverness he obtains when he is forced to make quick decisions.
At the beginning of the story, Bilbo seems very cowardly, but soon proves that he is indeed brave. Bilbo is very tied up in his very boring, monotonous life and he really does not want to go on the adventure that he is
