Bilbo fails to steal a bag from a Troll’s pocket when he was told to observe the red light from the dwarves’ camp. (43) From this failure, the dwarves begin to doubt his usefulness as a burglar, causing him to lose faith in himself. As time progresses, Bilbo proves to the dwarves, especially Thorin, and himself of what he is capable of. He gains confidence with the defeat of each of his enemies.
The “hero’s Journey” begins with a call to an ordinary individual to leave the ordinary world. This calls prompts the individual to leave the common life to venture into the realm of the unknown. The journey continues with the individual leaving the ordinary world to descend into the special world. The decent into the special world brings the individual through different adventures and experiences that reveal weakness and allow for strength and development to conquer those weaknesses. Bilbo baggins journey represents the “hero’s Journey”as he leaves the ordinary world as an ordinary hobbit,enters the special world as a developing warrior,and returns as an unexpected hero.
The first character I want to talk about is Mr. Bilbo Baggins because in my view he is the character that went thorough the most change in compare to any other character that we read about so far. Mr. Bilbo Baggins is the main character/hero in the book and we can analyze and critique his journey from “Joseph Campbell: Hero with a Thousand Faces, 1949.” In the beginning of the book, Mr. Bilbo Baggins is living in Bag End, a hobbit community, like every other hobbit he is comfortable and content. He loves his food, his pipe, and his snug little hole. This here, Bag End, is the ordinary world and this where Mr. Bilbo Baggins lives in, but there is more to Mr. Bilbo Baggins than what meets the eye.
Tolkien uses Bilbo as a character who is not so easily corrupted by greed and is thus, able to carry the journey forward. Because of this virtue, Bilbo is able to see reason and make decisions that will benefit the greater good and stop useless violence. Even though this is not his home, Bilbo feels a sense of duty and risks his life to help the Dwarves. Unlike Odysseus, Bilbo is an unlikely hero who only sets out on the journey after being persuaded by Gandalf, a wizard. Bilbo relies mostly on his luck and on Gandalf to be saved.
Bilbo's life has changed a lot after just one night. One day he was just doing the normal thing and staying at his home, the next day he was pickpocketing a giant, later he was walking on a rock giant in a deadly storm, then he gets into a underground place with an unknown creature. Bilbo has really done something with his old house life. First, Bilbo has never done anything compared to pickpocketing a giant. The dwarves saw a light then told bilbo to go check it out.
Over time the hobbit gains his courage, becomes braver, and portrays acts of heroism. For example, when the giant spiders almost eat the dwarves, Bilbo distracts the spiders and cuts the dwarves out
Bilbo faces yet another fight when a war starts between the five armies; dwarves, men, elves, goblins, and wargs. He stops the war between the allies by keeping the Arkenstone from them. He uses the ring to avoid his capture and saves his crew, except for Thorin who dies during the battle. After Bilbo and his crew escape, they finally return to Hobbiton. “it gave him more sorrow than joy, and he was now weary of his adventure.
Everything his normal hobbit life stood for was juristically changed. Joseph Campbell’s hero pattern disrupted Bilbo’s normal attitude and what not and made him into a hero. He refused his call to adventure, yet of course he ended up going on the adventure in spite. He was an aid to Gandalf defeating the trolls, crossing of the first threshold. Yet at the end of this adventure he didn’t even want his reward he would rather go home under the hill, magic flight back to his original world.
Bilbo’s Heroic Journey Essay In all the stories, tales, and novels there is always a main character, most of the time the main character is a hero or hero-like. A lot of the time the author would use a formula called The Hero’s Journey or The Archetypal Journey, it is a way for writers and authors to keep track and follow step by step in order to successfully form a heroic character in a story. The Heroic Journey was written by Joseph Campbell, he was an American mythologist and writer. Some people do not believe Bilbo Baggins in the novel The Hobbit does not follow the heroic journey, but I think he follows the heroic journey step by step.
(Tolkien #155). Bilbo also has many upbringings, his moms side is fancy, and likes to go on adventures. “And once in a while memories from the took-clan would go and have adventures”. The last supporting detail that shows how Bilbo is a hero is when the author states, “Farewell good thief he said, I go now to the halls of waiting to sit beside my fathers, until the world is renewed”. This is how Bilbo is an archetypal character and how he is a hero.
He longs for adventure away from the hobbit hole. His life changes very quickly when he meets Gandalf and the 12 dwarves. After accepting Gandalf's challenge Bilbo goes on an action packed quest. Bilbo, the main character in The Hobbit is clearly an archetypal hero based on the 12 steps of the hero's journey. This can be shown with examples from the story.
In “The Hobbit” by J.R.R. Tolkien Bilbo’s character changes in many different ways. In the first few chapters, Bilbo was a scared Hobbit, but as the chapters progress he became brave. Bilbo loves the adventures that they are going on, although he was scared of the adventures in the first chapters. Throughout the chapters Bilbo lets Gandalf be the leader, but in chapter eight Bilbo takes the role of the leader. Bilbo changes in many ways throughout the first eight chapters of “The Hobbit”.
Author of When Irish Eyes Are Sparkling, Tom Collins once wrote, “A real hero doesn't expect to be thanked or even recognized” (Heroes). A hero is someone who helps others with no thought of self-profit. Much like the hero that Tom Collins describes, the main character in The Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins is a hero who looks to join in the Dwarves’ quest in retrieving the Arkenstone in their new adventure. Each of his heroic acts helps develop himself as a character and his relationships with the other characters in the novel. In J.R.R Tolkien’s The Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins undergoes a transformation of character from the journey he takes with Gandalf and the Dwarves.
The Hobbit is a piece of prose written by J.R.R Tolkien. In the story the main character Bilbo Baggins fits the definition of a traditional hero. A traditional hero is someone with a physical strength, a forceful personality, and a craving for adventure or even conflict. Traditional heroes also often leave home, seek out honor and glory, and repeatedly prove themselves worthy. Bilbo proves that he is a hero throughout the story with his characteristics, choices, and behaviors.
The dwarves gets lost in the woods and lose each other while getting captured by the spiders. Bilbo does not get captured, and looks for the dwarves. He says the dwarves from the spiders, and they keep on moving. The company gets captured again, but it is by the same wood elves who captured Thorin. Bilbo quickly puts on his ring and disappears.
