1.0 Definition
According to Australian medical experts, binge drinking is described as the consumption of an excessive amount of alcohol in a short period of time. Put simply, it’s when someone (both young and old) drinks too much alcohol in a short time span. It can also refer to drinking continuously for multiple days, occasional/irregular bouts of drinking heavily and drinking for the soul purpose to get drunk or become intoxicated.
Binge drinking is an extremely dangerous practice, not only for the drinker, but also for people in surrounding areas. This is because the drinker will experience moderate to serious health defects, and also (while intoxicated) will lose inhibitions and the ability to make good decisions, therefore endangering the people around them.

First of all, the morning after one has been highly intoxicated, one will experience what is known as a hangover which includes dramatic headaches, nausea, dehydration, sensitivity to the senses, exhaustion and, in some cases, vomiting and diarrhoea; these are the short term affects. In the long term, binge drinking may also lead to a dependence on alcohol (and therefor a deficit in money), liver damage and also brain damage.
2.2 Statistical Data
Binge drinking is the most common pattern of excessive alcohol use in Australia. Over 62% of Australians drink at least once in a single week, and in extension to that, more than 20% of 14-19 year olds consume alcohol on a weekly basis. These statistics are alarmingly high, especially when considering that alcohol is a major contributing cause of violence in Australia. More than three-quarters of a million Australians were physically abused by people under the intoxication of alcohol.
