Larry R. Wilson was born in Lavages Nevada on January 13th 1968 by the parents of John and June Wilson. As a young child Larry moved around with his parents, twin brother, older sister and two-step siblings from Nevada to Oregon then to Appalachian New York where the family settled down. Larry would soon learn from his parents what it takes to be an entrepreneur. John and June Wilson would open “Video King” movie rentals, starting in September of 1983. However, who knew in the year of 1984, at age 16, would “walk into the BSB Bank and asked for $300,000” as written by the Press in Sun Billiton published on December 13th, 2013. The interviewer, Jon Harris, asked, “When was the video business as the peek?” Wilson would answer, “Probably in the years of 1996 and 1997, in those year the business was very profitable.” (Harris, Press and Sun Billiton) This response by Wilson was not shocking. As the American Paradox states that by the year 1996 that entertainment products was worth more than any other industry in the world. Between software and entertainment, the industry was worth $60.2 billon (The American Paradox, pg. 338). More than ever people where busy buying TV’s personal computers, VCR’s, and other entertainment systems. This new market allowed more company’s such as DreamWorks, and Universal to capitalize and create “super brands” that were known in every household accost the glob. Western courtesies such as China were now transitioning now more than ever into the United States culture in music and movies. This being the reason Blockbuster had so many movie outlets in foreign nations in the late 1990’s. Wilson in a fall 2014 interview was asked “What made you successful with the video stores as opposed to the large corporations?” To which I believe Wilson’s answer was extremely well thought out and true. “ If you talk about me versus the major companies, we just give unbelievable service, run a great facility, market the heck out of it, give to the local community.
