Throughout life individuals are faced with frequent experiences that evidently cause our frame of minds or moods to change. Different situations lead us to feel different emotions during various situations ranging from happiness and blissfulness to sadness and grief. People who are affected by bipolar disorder, also known as manic depressive illness go through extreme mood swings and alternate between a depressive to a mania state of emotions. Bipolar disorder is not gender biased since the probability of both men and women who develop the disease is almost the same. However, studies have shown that women are more prone to episodes and even may be more resistant to treatments. Females tend to be inclined to experience the depression state since they are more vulnerable to disorders involving internalized states. Hormones and premenstrual cycles play a critical role in this development. On the other hand, males tend to be more external through demonstrating a lack of impulse or control. Indivduals living with parents who have alcholo or substance abuse, mood swings or other traumatic events occurring in their every day life. These environmental stressors play a critgical role in triggering bipolar e[pisodes in thos who are genetically predisposed.
