Did you know that there is a major difference between what Bipolar Depression is and what Personality Disorder is? Bipolar Depression is a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, and the ability to carry out day-to-day tasks. While Personality Disorder is a deeply ingrained, inflexible pattern of relating, perceiving, and thinking serious enough to cause distress or impaired functioning. Many people do not know that they are not the same thing. People with Bipolar Depression suffer from shifts in mood while people with personality disorder from shifts in personality depending on the situation.

Studies show that brains of people with the bipolar disorder may be different from the people whose brains are healthy or from other metal disorders (National Institute of Mental Health). There are many signs and there are many symptoms that people with bipolar disorder have and do experience. People with this will experience periods of unusually intense emotion, changes in sleep pattern and activity levels, and unusual behaviors. These periods are called ‘’mood episodes’’ (National Institute of Mental Health). Mood episodes are drastically different from the moods and behaviors that are typical for the person (National Institute of Mental Health). Extreme changes in energy, activity and sleep go along with mood episodes (National Institute of Mental Health). These experiences that people having a manic episode may experience may be, but aren’t limited to feeling very elated in mood, lots of energy, activity levels are increases, feeling weird, trouble sleeping, becoming more active than usual, talking really fast about a lot of different things, being irritated, feeling like their thoughts are going faster than normal, thinking they can do a lot at once, and doing more risky things as in money spending or reckless sex (National Institute of Mental Health). When this occurs, this is called an episode with mixed features, this may cause someone to feel very sad, empty, or hopeless (Elsevier 159). These people will also be very energized at the same time. With bipolar disorder this can occur and even be present when mood swings are less extreme (Elsevier 159). When trying to diagnose bipolar disorder there are several ways you can. First, there is a physical exam, where the doctor does medical scams on you to see if that could or be the reason for you to have this disorder (National Institute of Mental Health). Second, there is a psychiatric assessment, where the doctor may refer to a psychiatrist (National Institute of Mental Health). The psychiatrist may then ask and talk to you about your feelings and your thoughts (National Institute of Mental Health). Third, there is mood charting, where you might start keeping track of your daily moods and how you have and were sleeping the night prior (National Institute of Mental Health). Finally, fourth-the criteria for bipolar disorder, where your psychiatrist may start to compare your symptoms to those who have and had bipolar disorders or disorders that are closely related to bipolar (National Institute of Mental Health). There are some ways that might help the disorder from getting worse but there is no way to completely stop this from happening (National Institute of Mental Health).
