How does the media present Bipolar disorder, do they present it accurately or do they misrepresent it? The media has been known in the past to misrepresent what it's really like to have Bipolar. It isn't as known now to be as common but there are still several stereotypes about those with mental illnesses like bipolar and misrepresent it. They never talk about what you can do to get help if you have it, but always make characters in shows who have it, out to be the violent, rageful person. When in reality not every person who is diagnosed with Bipolar is violent or full of rage. There are several external factors that trigger manic or manic-depressive episodes to happen such as stress, substance abuse, taking certain medications, sleep deprivation and even seasonal changes.” Most episodes don't have a trigger, but when they do they will either cause a new episode or they will make the existing symptoms worse.”(helpguide.org, Melinda Smith, paragraph 31) Stressful situations that are drastic or sudden can easily trigger an episode, having a lot of stress makes you more vulnerable to having an episode occur. By losing sleep it makes you more vulnerable to having a manic episode especially if it is Summer because manic episodes are very common in the summer so by losing sleep will make you more likely to have an episode occur. Some examples of ways to treat Bipolar is medication, psychotherapy, and mood stabilizers. By taking the medication it will help treat the disorder, psychotherapy will help treat the symptoms, and the mood stabilizers will help with the mood swings. The three main types of Bipolar are Bipolar 1, Bipolar 2, and Cyclothymic disorder. Bipolar 1 can be identified by its severe episodes of mania and manic depression. In order to be diagnosed with Bipolar 1, you need to of had at least 1 episode of mania and 1 major episode of manic depression. Some children display symptoms that overlap other disorders as well, which makes it harder to diagnose and leaves more room for misdiagnosis.
