For my assignment, I choose major depression and bipolar disorder. As a leader, I interact with a lot of different personalities and energies, it’s my responsibility to motivate and empower my employees regardless of their unique qualities. At times, I have worked with employees who struggle with depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder, the information in this lesson helped me better understand mood disorders and how they affect people. Major Depression is the feeling of sadness, emptiness, and hopelessness most of the day and nearly all day. During this period, people normally loose interest or enjoyment in their everyday activities such as hobbies, sports, social events, sex, and other things. During manic episodes, people might make hostile comments, talk rapidly, have inflated self-esteem, and engage in harmful activities. Both major depression and bipolar disorders often have imbalances in certain neurotransmitters, these neurotransmitters are important to regulate bodily functions such as appetite, sex drive, sleep, arousal, and mood, lack of treatment of both disorders can often lead to life threating consequences such as suicide. Despite their similarities, major depression and bipolar have some unique differences. Unlike bipolar disorder, depression affects people most of the day, nearly all day, they have reoccurring thoughts of death, which diminishes their ability to concentrate or think decisively. Bipolar disorder on the other hand, has an increased energy that normally includes flight of ideas, excessive involvement in pleasurable activities, attention drawn to themselves, and decreased need for
