The Birth of Venus was a two dimensional piece of art, painted on a canvas by artist Sandro Botticelli. This painting is currently located in Uffizi Gallery in Florence Italy. Botticelli worked on this painting from 1484 until 1486, making this painting fall into the category of renaissance paintings. Botticelli paints this image of the mythology goddess, Venus. Venus was the goddess who represented love, sex, and fertility. Botticelli painted Venus to appear as she is coming out of the seashell. Venus was not painted like women we see now a days, by that I mean, Venus was painted purposely plump because back in the renaissance age, the size of the woman determined her health. It was believed back then that the bigger the woman was, the healthier she was. It was understood that the bigger a woman’s hips, the easier of a time she would have during child bearing and child birth. Since Venus is known as the goddess of fertility, it makes sense that her body and her hips are accentuated in this painting to represent her purpose. The purpose of this painting was to represent the birth of the goddess, Venus. In this painting, we see that Venus is being “born” from the sea. She is coming to life as a full grown woman, brought out of the water by a large seashell. To the right of Venus, there is a woman who appears to be holding a purple sheet of some sort. I feel like this painting represents a calmness as the soft colors and the implied motion are being used. I feel like the painting is symmetrical because there are people on both sides of Venus who take up about the same amount of area on the canvas. I feel that Botticelli is trying to emphasize that Venus is a goddess and he is emphasizing the type of goddess she
