The law review article I chose was written by a Law Professor regarding police claims on self-defense. The author talks about Zimmerman’s murder trial and how the judge refused to allow prosecution to argue that the neighborhood watch volunteer racially profiled Martin. Zimmerman was charged with second-degree murder for shooting a 17-year-old, Trayvon Martin. The state of Florida filed an affidavit of probable cause stating that Zimmerman profiled and confronted Martin and shot him to death when Martin didn’t commit any crimes. Zimmerman claims he shot Martin in self-defense.
I chose to write on an incident that occurred on Feb 26, 20102, in Sanford, Florida. George Zimmerman a 28 year old mixed Hispanic male shot and killed Trayvon Martin. Zimmerman was a volunteer neighborhood watch coordinator, in a gated community in Florida. While on duty, Zimmermann had a concealed weapon and carried a 9mm pistol. (Zimmerman did have a legal permit).

On February 26, 2012, a 17 year old boy named Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by a man named George Zimmerman. George was found not guilty in July of 2013. President Obama spoke upon the ruling of this case. “It could have been me 35 years ago” stated Obama. Most African Americans went through being followed in the stores, hearing the doors on the car lock as they passed by, or had a woman move her purse closer to her as they walked in the elevator.
Trayvon Benjamin Martin was an African American boy born on February 5, 1995 in Miami, Florida. Serving a ten-day high school suspension, with his father, Trayvon Martin had gone to visit his father's fiancée’s townhouse at The Retreat at Twin Lakes in Sanford, Florida. On the evening of February 26, 2012, Martin walked to a convenience store to purchase an Arizona Tea and a bag of Skittles. The neighborhood in which Martin was walking through had been the victim of multiple robberies times that year. As Martin returned from the store, George Zimmerman, who was the neighborhood watch captain at The Retreat at Twin Lakes in Sanford, spotted Martin and decided to call the Sanford Police to report Martin for suspicious behavior.
It’s been 4 years since the killing of Trayvon Martin and the verdict still hasn’t ended the debate about his death. Many supporters believe that his murder was a cowardly act by one George Zimmerman who shot and killed Martin. It was the night of February 26 when Martin went to a nearby 7-eleven to buy himself a snack. Wearing the hood of his grey shirt over his head, he paid the store clerk and left. He was walking back to his father’s house, where he was staying after he had been suspended from school.
This teenager was walking along the sidewalk to his home when George Zimmerman, a member of the community watch, called the police and reported a suspicious black boy was roaming the streets. During this time period there had been several robberies in the area. So, instead of waiting for backup from the police, Zimmerman approached Martin on his own and questioned him. There was soon an altercation between the two and Zimmerman eventually shot the teenager. When the police arrived on the scene, Trayvon was already dead.
The Black Lives Matter was founded in 2013 by three African American women. It’s another social justice that has made national news for their cause. Black Lives Matter is just more than a social movement. It is an out cry for help, as a nation, as a whole. Black Lives Matter is a community.
Statement of Purpose In light of recent events and social media uproar, the goal of this argumentative paper is to provide a brief but comprehensive understanding to the concept of the black lives matter movement and slogan. The movement is an affirmation of Black people’s contributions to society, humanity, and their resilience in the face of oppression. (“About,” n.d.) As a result, this paper will critically examine the foundation of the movement and the validity of both sides of the argument and the media’s involvement and several other topics.

This report is showing light to the communities’ response to police brutality particularly in the black communities and also their encounters with police officers. Police brutality is physical violence and great cruelty demonstrated by a police officer. Police brutality and misconduct have existed for many decades and it even has been broadcasted in news stories over America, but nothing has changed. It has happened predominantly to African Americans in lower-income states. Police officers are given slaps on the wrist for taking a life or injuring an innocent person.

When you think of Black Lives Matter what do you think? A hate movement? Violence? Well it is in fact none of those things and this article is going to help you understand why. After the murder of Treyvon Martin in the year 2012 the Black Lives Matter movement was created in response to this unjust death.
