Elijah Anderson, a Yale professor, developed the concept or theory entitled the “code of the street” which explains the reasoning for high rates of street violence among African-American juveniles in a Philadelphia community. The “code of the street” is the way of life for many living in poverty-stricken communities which attempt to regulate behaviors. Anderson observed that juveniles in inner-city neighborhoods who are exposed to racial discrimination, economic disadvantages and alienation from mainstream society may lead violent behavior. The first point that Rhodes makes is his idea of the term ‘chav’ and ‘white working class’ means. His second point that he makes is his definition of what whiteness is, and how the concept of it is constantly changing. Du Bois (2007) found that in the Seventh Ward in Philadelphia, only 2% of black men over 21 were in learned professions, such as teaching, while 45% were servants, and for women over 21, 37% were domestic servants and 27% were housewives and day labourers. In addition, black people were far more likely to lose their jobs through no fault of their own, and they would generally be paid lower wages (Du Bois, 2007). Black people also struggled with finding work as they often had few skills due to their history of enslavement, as well as the fact that there was more competition from an increasing number of immigrants (Du Bois, 2007). The problems that black Philadelphians faced with employment then caused serious poverty, with crime and pauperism of black people seeming to exceed that of white people, which was expected due to most black people being from a lower social class (Du Bois, 2007). This shows how the fact that most black Philadelphians could not find well paid, skilled work caused poverty which then led to further issues in their lives, including poor housing and poor health, illustrating how economic factors did have a significant impact on the lives of black
Generational Poverty Poverty has been around for numerous years. Poverty can be a generational problem if people let it. James Baldwin’s “Sonny’s Blues” and David Joy’s “Digging in the trash” both show that families in poverty do not have it easy, the children will live in poverty unless something is done, and people either find a way of escape or stand up against it. In the short story, “Sonny’s Blues” Baldwin shows how the lack of monetary resources affects many generations.

On top of this, he argues that the white middle class are unrelenting with their methods of depriving black advancement in American society. Knowledge of this incites many blacks to occupy dead-end jobs, or to settle for mediocrity in the face of adversity. A large number of black males in America find themselves forced to take jobs that offer no security, or socioeconomic growth. He also contends that many blacks are not very literate and therefore left behind in cultural revolutions like the information age. For twelve months between 1962 and 1963, Liebow and a group of researchers studied the behavior of a group of young black men who lived near and frequently hung around a street corner in a poor black neighborhood in downtown Washington, D.C. Liebow’s participant observation revealed the numerous obstacles facing black men on a day-to-day basis, including the structural and individual levels of racial discrimination propagated by whites in society.
Poverty is affecting billions of people around our world and the number is growing with each day. Many people think they can avoid the effects of poverty, but it is something that affects all of our daily lives. Many people see poverty as a person who lacks money, although this is true poverty is caused by many more things than being without money. Just the fact that one in two children live in poverty can help people see clearly the impact it has on our world. Poverty truly does influence the type of care and treatment a person will receive when they need it.
The progression of materialism in the media and advertising has a major affect on young African Americans which can cause poor money issues. In a materialistic society, young African Americans aim to gain a sense of importance through buying expensive things and owning the latest whether it be celebrity shoes, pricy clothing, high-tech electronics, or luxury cars, that we can show off to our peers in hopes of impressing them. It is almost as if young African Americans are brainwashed to not only have the best, but to drag one another into competition, boasting about what they have and daring the next to top it. As a result of that competition, young African Americans who do not meet the “expectations” of their peers are humiliated and ridiculed so harshly because they do not own a pair of four hundred dollar jeans or two hundred dollar shoes. There are many open wounds in the African-American community that have not healed what so ever. Disintegration of family structures in the African-American community has been a persistent problem for far too long. High out of wedlock birth rates, absent fathers, and the lack of a family support network for many young African-Americans have led to serious problems in America's urban areas. The persistence of serious social problems in inner-city areas has led to a tragic perpetuation of racial prejudice as well. African Americans still face a litany of problems in the 21st century today.
Urban Injustice: How Ghettos Happen, explains that the gap between the rich and the poor in the United States is greater than it has been in thirty years (Hilfiker & Edelman, 2002). Furthermore, every forty three seconds, a child is born into poverty (Hilfiker & Edelman, 2002, p. IX). Those citizens most affected by these realities are African Americans (Hilfiker, 2002). These people face unique hardships and oppression as compared to the rest of the population.
