In Black No More written by George Schuyler, the critique of whiteness not being intricate if someone is able to buy it outlines the novel. Schuyler uses melodrama and satire to show the critique of whiteness. In this novel, whiteness is defined by privacy, capital, and mobility. Segregation will always take place even if it has nothing to do with race, racialization. Therefore, even when the black race is scarce, people are still going to segregate. The crique within “Black No More” is shown through the exaggerating, melodrama, and humor throughout the novel. First, the cooperation of Black No More is centered around the critique of whiteness. Disher was the first person in New York to undergo the operation. He decides to undergo the operation because a white, blonde, and seemed to be an upper class woman turned him down at a bar when he asked her to dance. Therefore, he changed the color of his skin to win over a woman. After the operation, Disher moves to Georgia to find the woman of his dreams. After moving, Max Disher changes his name to Matthew Fisher because he did not want anyone to know he was a black subject. Moving throughout the novel, Fisher is not able to find the love of his life at first; therefore, he sets out to find a job. Fisher goes to Rev. Henry Givens and lies to him saying he is an anthropologist and talks sophisticated enough for him Givens to hire him. It is ironic in this situation because Fisher gets hired at an organization that is trying to get Black No More shut down. A flyer for the organization explains, “The Knights Of Nordica. Want 10,000 Atlanta White Men and Women to Join in the fight for Race Integrity. Imperial Konklave Tonight. The racial integrity of the Caucasian Race is being threatened by the activities of a scientific black Beelzebub in New York. Let us Unite Now Before It Is Too Late!” (Schuyler 65). She did not want to marry him at first because Fisher had to prove he had the money. This shows whiteness because she is not willing to marry Fisher if he did not have the money. Years later, Fisher impregnated his wife, but the baby will be born biracial. The irony in this situation is Fisher has been living a “wages of whiteness” life and now he does not know what to do about the baby. Fisher and Bunny talk about options Fisher has, but nothing seems to be a good option. Humor is brought out during the novel to prove how whiteness is not ethical. Fisher is only out for himself; however, if the baby is born biracial everyone will know his secrete. In the novel, Bunny and Fisher have a conversation about the baby being born and Fisher’s wife realizing the baby is biracial will leave Fisher in a heartbeat. Fisher’s thought of his wife leaving him is part of the critique because throughout the novel she is head over heels in love with Fisher.
