Throughout history, disobedience has been at the forefront of change. Many revolutions started with just a few people fighting back. Numerous inequitable laws and regulations would still be in use if people didn’t take a stand. When you create rules that only cater to specific people, you force others to break them just by living. Disobedience is an inevitable part of our society that fuels necessary change. The Black Panther Party arose in the late 1960s, starting as a patrol and then becoming a foundational part of the Civil Rights Movement. The show tackles many topics such as family and relationship dynamics, loss, persistence, and what it’s like to live in a lawless society. At the beginning of season 7, the main group led by a man named Rick Grimes struggles to rebuild after a devastating outbreak. As they’re traveling to find a medic, Negan, the leader of the Survivors, apprehends Rick’s group. Negan had been a controversial name for a while as he was infamous for setting cruel examples of what happens when he doesn’t get what he wants. Rick wanted to communicate with Negan before things took a turn for the worse. However, the furthest thing from that happened. Abraham, a member of Rick’s group was killed to set an example of what happens when they didn’t obey Negan’s absurd rules. Understandably, another member of Rick’s group named Daryl resisted. He tried to fight back but that only led to another person being killed. This time it was Glenn who died. Glenn was an incredibly import character, so when his life was taken from him, the others fought back. They could not live sustainably or even peacefully under Negan. They overtook the Survivors and were finally able to start their lives over. Negan created an oppressive situation, and Rick’s group disobeyed because they had to.
