For this week discussion I chose options 2: Discuss the relevance of millennial black parents' engagement in racial socialization. Might it be different from parents who are older? Is racial socialization still relevant for black parents? Racial Socializations is verbal or non-verbal message passed through generations to generations for development of attitude, value, behavior along with beliefs regarding the mean and significance of race and group identity. In my opinion as being an Black African America woman I can say I think Black parents engage in racial socialization the same way now as they did in the past, Black people are already looked down upon or label as trouble (Robinson-wood, 2015) or menace to society base on their skin color from the day they are born into this world, which cause them to fight against the odds place upon them, however most don’t understand until they grow older. Black parents prepared their children or family members to face a racially hostile world, black parents have longed engaed in racial socialization practices in an effort to interrogate race for survival purposes as well as to resist racial oppression (ward, 2000). In doing so black parents discuss with their children how to survive and thrive in society were race matters.
