In his essay entitled Black Men and Public Space (1987), Brent Staples talks about how people will have a common misconception on the black community by thinking that they are all mugger ,rapist or thugs. Staples supports his claim by telling the reader events/ stories that occured to him and talks about how people will assume that he is a danger to society when in reality he isnt. The authors purpose is to inform the reader that his experiences of being stereotyped is to show the reader his point of view when it comes to these types of situations. Staples writes in a formal tone for an intelligent or free minded person.

This unfortunate stereotype is still highly prevalent today. We all read about African-American men committing crimes, we see it in the news and on social media. That goes to say, not all crimes are committed solely by black men, and black men should not be treated like criminals based off of others wrongdoings. Staples recounts the events of a night he went for a walk. On this walk, he encountered a well-dressed white woman (as he so described) who instinctively mistook him for a criminal.

That to me seems to be limiting the theory by only focusing on one race group, stating that only poor, black areas are where the code exists and operates. Though it does mention the stigma of race, using the terms “ghetto” and “street kids” is insinuating that all areas where black people living in poor areas are crime ridden areas. Another weakness is the part where “decent families” are discussed. According to the text, decent families and street families live in the same area but live by a vastly different set of values and rules. It’s a very black and white theory where families are either “street” or “decent”.
Mr. Reverend Al Sharpton has helped and is helping the African American community by telling whites to say and accept the consequences that follow when harassing blacks, telling the police to stop because it is a racial injustice, and telling his story on how he got involved back in the 1970s. We still care because racial injustice is still a problem and police and white people are harassing blacks and then lying about it and not seeming to care a single bit at what happens. First, Al Sharpton got involved in Civil Rights because police harassed him and friends while in handcuffs at a 1970 New York City (NYC) sit in (biography.yourdictionary.com). In the book it compared the Bronx, New York to Palo Alto, California. The Bronx had more African American residence, while Palo Alto’s demographics were mainly white people. It was suggesting that a place like the Bronx had a higher crime rate than Palo Alto, because of black people were living there. Today, the United States still struggle with issues regarding African Americans and police brutality. The racial inequality is better now than it was before, however, there are some people that still hold a bias against black people.
The year is 2016 and American society is open-minded to so many issues, except televised stereotypes. Racial and gender stereotypes are continually reinforced by social media and television, it has played a major role in the way society views one another. Enabling stereotypes that have been associated with a person of specific race or gender in the media promotes prejudice. Meaning society expects that person to act a certain way based on what they have witnessed on television or social media. . A perfect example of how television shows incorporate stereotypes based on ethnicity is the tv show “Everybody Hates Chris “which is about a working class African-American family that lives in a poor urban neighborhood in New York.
Blacked Out Most Americans are afraid of African Americans. Why, we ask? Most of us don’t know why we do, is it their physical appearance or is it the fact that they have a different skin tone? In Chapter 5: Black Men of The Culture of Fear by Barry Glassner, Glassner argues that the media exaggerates the excessive attention paid to African-Americans (Glassner 109). Throughout the chapter, Glassner exposes us to secrets and truths about how the media makes us fear African-Americans, they feed us irrelevant information that make it seem like blacks are still a lower class and therefore treating them like they are still slaves.
Americans Stereotypes: Loosening stereotypes Americans are always scared when they see a black man and think about them trying to harm them. Actually, that isn’t always the case and isn’t the case a lot of the time. Brent Staples in his writing Black Men in Public Spaces shows some of the societies stereotype issues. Americans should stop stereotyping blacks, not purposely go around them at night, and he shouldn’t have to whistle to make people comfortable around him. Americans put stereotypes on different ethnicities.

Those who have a high exposure to negative television portrayals of African Americans are more inclined to make negative assumptions about African Americans. Sadly, unfavorable portrayals of this particular group of people not only influences the whites’ perception of them, but it influences the perceptions of the group as well. The perpetuation of African Americans as lazy has been embedded in American society, not only by words and images projected by journalists but also by a wide variety of other media and entertainment sources. The implicit bias has impacted the way African American communities have been and are being treated across practically all sectors of life in America, from courtrooms to doctors’ offices. Media bias not only negatively impacts this group’s relationship with law enforcement and the judicial system, but it extends to how they are perceived in society at large.
As individuals, and in groups, we can change our communities. We can set up neighbourhoods and institutions in which people commit them self to working to form strong relationship bonds and alliances with people of diverse cultures and backgrounds.
Even though, we can acquire this knowledge, awareness and understanding just by surfing the internet or reading a book, we can make the effort to ask the people living in our community our questions, deepening our understanding, awareness and knowledge about them and at the same time bonding with them.
