The second effort at change for African-Americans at a time during their oppression was the explosion of Black Power. The Black Power movement was more about embracing the African heritage and having African-Americans take control over economic and social changes instead of being equal with Caucasians. Believing in Black power meant leaning towards more separation of races and reacting to any violence done by Caucasians. This was opposite of the teachings of the more traditional Civil Rights movement where the belief was in racial integration and passive resistance. A participant in this movement would be known as a Black Panther. The Black Panther’s signature look was an afro, beret, a black leather jacket, and a fist shot up to show unity
