It is about 9 P.M. on the 25th of May. Light rain is trickling down. Blanche, Allan, and Robert, his old friend, arrive at the Moon Lake Casino. They drive past a lake and onto the sidewalk, where Blanche grinds Allan’s car to a halt. They stagger out of the vehicle and Allan and Robert’s faces are full of glee, as they giggle uncontrollably. Allan seems lifeless as he holds a bottle of red wine, the likely culprit of the crimson stain on Blanche’s favorite outfit: her white blouse. The entrance of the casino is buzzing with loud music and voices. Blanche hobbles over to the trunk of the car, takes off her heels, and puts on flat shoes, probably expecting to dance later in the evening. She gives the keys to the car to Allan. The trio heads towards the casino. …show more content…

Come on, we must dance! [She sprints to the entrance of the casino. Allan sighs and slowly lifts himself up. He heads towards the casino, walking briskly. The sound is coming from the bar and Allan sees Blanche dancing by herself on the dance floor. He walks up to her and asks to have a word, but she grabs his hand before he finishes his sentence. Blanche puts a finger to her lips and invites Allan to dance the Varsouviana. He accepts hesitantly. [Suddenly, Blanche stops dancing and stares into Allan’s eyes.] BLANCHE: I saw! I know! You disgust me... [Allan freezes. Then, he pushes Blanche aside and sprints towards the casino’s exit. Blanche stays motionless, shocked, then edges towards the corner of the dance floor and finds a chair to sit on. She puts her head in her hands and takes a deep breath. Seconds later, Robert appears from behind her.] ROBERT: Blanche, have you seen Allan? I could’ve sworn that I’d seen him on this very dancefloor, just moments ago. BLANCHE [lifting her head up]: Yes, that’s where we were—dancing the Varsouviana, until he ran off. ROBERT: Ran off? Where
