I found that when Bilbo had the chance to leave the quest, and he decided to stay was a huge turning point in Bilbo’s development as a character. In the beginning of the book, if Bilbo had the choice to leave, I definitely think that he would have taken advantage of it. Another turning point in his development as a character was when he killed the spider by himself. I think this is a turning point for Bilbo because before I don’t think that he had the courage to accomplish something like this and not only did he kill the spider but he did it while singing. At first I hadn’t noticed this but then, when I really started to think about Bilbo in the beginning of the book, I started to realize that this fitted him perfectly. I thought at first that Bilbo seemed more of a hero because he was the one who came up with all the plans and ultimately took back the cave for the dwarves. What I hadn’t noticed was that in the beginning, Bilbo did not choose to take part in this quest and was subconsciously dragged into it therefore making him the reluctant hero. One theme that I found that related to this is that in order to experience new things, you need to come out of your comfort zone. This compares to Smaug who is the complete opposite of a reluctant hero. I think that Smaug would play the role of the villain because he took the home of the dwarves for absolutely no reason other than he wanted it for himself. This leads me to the dwarves who I believe play the roles of the innocent victims because they were torn apart from their home without having done anything wrong. The last archetypal character that I found was Gandalf who I believe played the wise old man.
