Ms. Stevens and her child, Tjayda Stevens are receiving preventive services with Harlem Dowling Westside Center for Children and Family Services (HDWC). Ms. Stevens’ case was referred from ACS and accepted thru HDWC on 03/02/2015. The services provided to Ms. Stevens are casework counseling, community advocacy, housing advocacy, and monthly home based visits to ensure stable family functioning and child safety. Ms. Stevens has been receptive to services since the agency obtained case planning responsibility. Administration for Children’s Services recommended the following service plan for Ms. Stevens to complete parenting and anger management class, individual counseling, and domestic violence.

I was fortunate enough to complete a three-hundred-hour internship with Albion Fellows Bacon Center. Connecticut Zero tolerance policies in Connecticut’s schools were contributing to high rates of School arrest and expulsion, particularly for youth with behavioral and mental health needs. In response, the state created the School-Based Diversion Initiative (SBDI) which uses mental health responders (provided by Emergency Mobile Psychiatric Service[EMPS] units) to respond to school-based incidents involving youth with mental health needs as an alternative to contacting the police or referring to juvenile court. The program is designed to reduce the number of school arrests, suspensions and expulsions by linking youth with mental health needs who are at risk of juvenile system involvement with appropriate community based services and supports.
In the movie Short Term 12, a drama about a foster-care facility for troubled teenagers portrays the emotional journey of the teenagers and the staff running the facility.
